Carmel

Exceptional city, Carmel makes sterling business address

Set your sights on Carmel, and you’ll land one of the state’s most coveted business addresses.

New urbanism characterizes the city center. Carmel, the largest community in Hamilton County, is pedestrian friendly, connected, and diverse in shopping and housing, yet even in its farthest corners, it doesn’t waver from Midwestern values, family traditions and architecture.

Perhaps unbelievably, all of this comes at a bargain price; Carmel has the lowest municipal tax rate in Hamilton County and the lowest rate among cities with more than 50,000 population in Indiana.

The city’s newest additions – the Arts & Design District and the Center for the Performing Arts – are commanding regional and national attention. People from more the 140 towns attended concerts in the Palladium, the Center’s highly praised concert hall, in the first 2 ½ months that it was open. The Arts District is becoming known as a premiere destination for finding interior designers and showrooms, art and antiques, restaurants, and a variety of retail shops.

Welcome mat is out

While the city remains family-friendly -- Forbes magazine named Carmel the best place in the nation to raise a family -- corporate America has found a welcoming home here, as well.

A network of thriving commercial corridors crisscrosses the city and paves the way to multiple business parks, making way for the numerous corporations that are headquartered in Carmel.

City leadership is dedicated to new business and innovative in its approach to maintain and update infrastructure so that commercial properties are shovel-ready and easy to access.

As Carmel’s population soared in the 1990s, Mayor Jim Brainard’s administration found a unique solution to heavy traffic demands. Roundabouts, they found, save drivers and the city money, move traffic better and increases safety.

More than 60 roundabouts have made Carmel a world leader, in fact. An international conference in May 2011 drew 400 civic officials from six nations to Carmel to learn about the circular design.

A highly educated workforce demands the highest standards in education, and Carmel-Clay Schools continuously meets the challenge. In the 2010-11 year alone, Carmel High School had 39 National Merit Semifinalists and three National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists.
